' WAS GRANDPA REALLY A HERO '

In 1943 in the Tunisian campaign of WW11, the recently formed 2 Para played an active part in the battle. One of the senior officers was a Major Ashford, sadly he was killed a few days after the photo was taken at Beja. This is the only photo that his family have of him in uniform and this was in a book about the formation of 2 Para.As you can see the photo was very flat and monochrome with very little detail. Maj. Ashford's grandson ( who I work with) asked me to see if I could do anything with the photo. This is my interpretation, have tried to give the images a little depth and character, and try to make them come alive a little. Hope I've succeeded a little, hope you like what I've tried to do. Included the photo so you can see what I had to work with. Will also post another version of the portrait to compere

Despite the age of the photo you managed to bring the face of war out on these Paras as indicated by their expression and the wrinkles of their smocks. Slightest bit of color to indicate their red berets compliments the famous lineage of this batallion played later operation Market-Garden, especially with its 43rd anniversary coming up in the next few weeks.

Artist Reply: Thanks Steven, you sound as though you know a little about the airborne? Just a little bit more if if your interested. I'm ex-airborne myself, sappers. Go to Arnhem every year as I carry the the Arnhem Veterans Standard. Every para's dream to go to Arnhem and actually jump there. Got the chance last year. Jumped the Dakota at Ginkel Heath, number two out the door, dressed in WW11 gear. Daft old sod ain't I , at 50 years of age? Wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Your tribute to our soldiers is heartwarming, and being one yourself, well~ this is very special, and I'm hoping you get MUCH satisfaction from it. I DO, it's great work (and my father was a wwII vet, too).

Artist Reply: Thanks once again Janet. It really is a labour of love with these old uns. Some of the stories they relate. and the best part is they're all true. Know this is true as they very rarely talk to ' outsiders ' and only tend to reminiss when together.
