Dave MacDonald's 1964 Indy Car

In 1964 Mickey Thompson was back again at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with more innovation. His controversial "flying saucers" were now streamlined within the limits of the open wheel rules. Powered by the successful Ford engine they also featured an increased reservoir for gasoline fuel. Car number 83 was qualified by skilled sports car driver but Indy rookie Dave MacDonald who confided with other drivers that although he was able to reach competitive speeds he didnt like the way the car handled. On the second lap of the race MacDonald passed Johnny Rutherford and Eddie Sachs, lost control in the fourth turn, hit the inside retaining wall, careening back to be struck by Sachs whose car was also gasoline fueled. The result was a massive explosion and the death of both drivers.
