Captain's house

From the 18th century until well into the 19th century, the Adriatic Sea was a busy shipping route to the Mediterranean. Trade flourished in the countries around it and the large and small ports experienced busy times with ships coming and going. The captains of these ships were regularly but seldom at home, but their income was ample. To compensate, they built impressive homes for their families, often with a view of the harbour. A number of these houses have been spared, now often used as a second residence or as a holiday home. Image size: 260 x 360mm
