The Tajo de Ronda

Ronda is located in a mountainous area in central Andalusia (Spain), about fifty kilometers inland from the Costa del Sol at about 750 meters above sea level. The river Guadalevín literally splits the town in two and, over the centuries, has carved a deep gorge known as Tajo de Ronda. In 1616, the Puente viejo, a bridge with a single arch across the gorge, was built to replace the previously collapsed Puente romano. Construction of the Puente nuevo was begun in 1751 and lasted 42 years. The bridge is considered the symbol of Ronda and is an attraction for the numerous tourists on the coast. Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles lived in Ronda for many years and described the beauty of the area. Image size: 260 x 360 mm
