Shrimp fisherman on horseback

This method of shrimp fishing came into use about 500 years ago and was practiced all along the Belgian coast. The horses, which often run up to their bellies in the beach water, drag two nets. After a few hours, the catch is taken to the beach where it is sifted. Fishing takes place from two hours before low tide to one hour after low tide. Initially mules were used but due to the use of heavier nets they switched to the strong Belgian draft horse. A number of traditional shrimp fishermen are still active along a small part of the Belgian coast. Since 2013, horse shrimp fishing has been included in the list of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity. mage size: 260 x 360 mm
