Tower from the Morbidly Adorable Tarot

With the iconic drawings by Pamela Colman Smith, this is my nod to the Tower from the Rider Waite Tarot Deck. I love the Iroquois Story of Creation about the World on the Great Sea Turtle’s back. Besides the wonderful gem that it is, it plays with our accepted notions of microcosm and macrocosm. I always imagined a tiny world living in the great hairstyle of a Victorian woman. Is this the Great Woman where the World was created? Is this a regular Victorian woman with tiny Borrower-sized people building a world in her hair? Maybe it’s also my nod to Marge Simpson (a whole village could live in her hair!), the Bride of Frankenstein (she is electric!), and one of my favorite paintings “The Suicide of Dorothy Hale” by Frida Kahlo (which dawned on me, whether intentional or not, has elements of the the Tower card in it!) The Tower card from the Morbidly Adorable Tarot is a card that foretells of disaster or sudden change. Something may be revealed to shake up your deeply held beliefs, make you question authority, or take a closer look. Living in a hairstyle, you may not want to get too comfortable as fashion changes! You may want to find a more stable place to make your home. The lightning bolt of truth hits the tower of blue hair sparking into flames. The inhabitants plunge to the unknown to escape the destruction. The world they know is beginning to crumble. The 22 fire bolts in the sky represent the 22 cards of the Major Arcana. I also played with sky whales and the Skelly from Eight of Wands makes an appearance zipping by in the background.
