This piece was almost finished at the time of my health issue. I've finessed it some since feeling better. Most notable change was my lightening the mask itself. I had it rather dull and gun-metallish but thought it too dark and lifeless in comparison to the base. I mixed some white, yellow ochre and portrait pink thinly to make a wash which still allowed the grey to show through but brightened the piece over all. Death Mask Of The Robot stands 19 inches tall, 8 inches wide and 3.75 inches deep. Robot is drawn from an old Church Slavonic word, robota, for “servitude,” “forced labor” or “drudgery.” The word, which also has cognates in German, Russian, Polish and Czech, was a product of the central European system of serfdom by which a tenant’s rent was paid for in forced labor or service. As a word, robot is a relative newcomer to the English language. It was the brainchild of a brilliant Czech playwright, novelist and journalist named Karel Capek (1880-1938) who introduced it in his 1920 hit play, R.U.R., or Rossum’s Universal Robots. You don't have to be purely mechanical to understand and experience 'forced labor' or 'drudgery,' now do you? Original Jones Art nods his head in northwest Austin, Texas.

LET ME GUESS --STYRAFOME AND MODELING PASTE++?....NICE WORK CHARLES..LOVE THE LINES....IT MATTERS NOT WHAT YOUR BASE MATERIALS ARE..I USE COMMON OBJECTS AS ART PROJECTS TO SHOW THAT IT CAN BE DONE...YOU CAN PAINT ON NEWSPAPER AS WELL AS LINEN....YOU CAN USE PAPER ARMETURES AND REENFORCE THEIR STRENGTH TO THAT OF NEAR-STEEL WITH PASTE...ACRYLIC GEL MEDIUM AND POLYURETHANE AND OR GLOSS OR ANIMAL SPIRITS...ETC....SO ..YOUR MATERIALS ARE WHATEVER YOUR ARTIST'S SOUL NEEDED TO MAKE YOUR STAEMENT...AND LET ME SAY......"....You spoke well...."

Artist Reply: No Styrofoam in this piece, Elton. I started with a mass of wet newsprint which I shaped and glued together. I then built it up with my custom compound which includes t-paper, Elmer's Glue-all, joint compound and acrylic polymer. The support is from an old chair I threw out after saving a few parts and the base is a block of wood I covered with my compound because it was cracked and pitted. Thanks for the comment; yours are always appreciated. :)

Awesome! What materials did you use to make it? Is it weather-proof? Stunning work of art. I'm sorry to hear you had some health issues.

Artist Reply: I don't think it's weather-proof, Ginger. I use t-paper, Elmer's Glue-all, joint compound and acrylic polymer. So it is made to sit inside not out. I just like natural light when I take photos. Thanks for the comment about the work as well as my health. Both are holding their own, I 'think.' :)

It looks perfect and powerful piece of work charles

Artist Reply: Thanks, Ray! I'm a poor man's sculptor, meaning I use materials I can afford. Also it is a good idea to keep me away from power tools, so something that can be made without them is probably a good idea. I came up with the first formula for this in 1998 and the pieces I made then look just as good now as when I made them. So with minimal care, they will assuredly outlast me. :)
