The Podenco Canario is a medium sized dog breed from the Canary Islands, Spanish islands near Africa. It is also known as the Canary Islands Hound, Canarian Warren Hound and the Canarian Hound. It is an ancient dog that while its origins are Spanish, there are some traces that go back to Ancient Egypt. Canario refers to where it comes from and Pedenco means hound. It has a life span of 11 to 13 years and was used mainly to hunt rabbit but was also used in pack hunting. Today it is both a good hunting dog and a good family companion (dogbreedsplus.com).
