Sachem (chief) Massasoit of the Wampanoag territory made a mutual aid peace treaty with Plymouth colony. Colony Governor Bradford declared a "day of thanksgiving" and Massasoit was invited - but he came a day early with 90 Indians, 5 dressed deer and over a dozen wild turkeys. They helped with preparations by teaching Pilgrim women to make hoecakes, maple syrup, pudding and popcorn, while the Pilgrims supplied garden vegetables, dried summer fruits and finely ground flour to make blueberry, apple, cherry pies and a sweet wild grape wine. Shooting, racing and wrestling contests went so well that Massasoit didn't want to leave and the 1st thanksgiving meal celebration extended itself into 3 days.
