When, begin of the sixties, the Belgian colony, Congo, became independent, the, in 1950 build Congoboat "Charlesville" became useless. The ship was sold to the national shipping company of former Republic of East Germany and received the name "Georg Büchner". After the fall of the Berlin wall the vessel was moored in Rostoc as a hotel and youth hostel. Because of financial problems a few years ago the ship was offered for breaking down. Altough the Belgian society of water-patrimony did his best to buy the ship for bringing it back to Antwerp and use it, after restauration, as a museum and congrescenter, the sold didn't take place. The aquarel shows the ex. "Charlesville", trailed out of the port of Rostoc, for her last journey, to the ship-breaker. It is synical that during this trip the ship sank in the Baltic sea.

A sad, inglorious tale. So many ships... so much time and energy put into their construction and careers.... and then they are gone. Similarly... the once proud SS United States, sits and rusts away in Philadelphia. There is a group trying to raise funds for a salvage restoration... but the boat continues to languish and the scrapyard looms...Ron Bedsole 29 May 2018
