Trailing a Liberty-ship into the port

In the first year of the second world-war a lot of cargo-ships of the allied powers were sink by German submarines. To help, the US started up a shipbuilding- program never seen before. Between 1941 and 1945 no less than about 2750 ships were builded one after another, known under the name Liberty-ships. These vessels, all of the same type, with a carrying-capacity of 7000 tons , were very easy to modulate inside and used for the carriage of freight, troups, passengers, oil and so on. Many of them didn't survive the war. After the war there was a great need of cargo-ships and many Liberty-ships were sold on the world market. Obvious they seem very solid, some of them still crossed the seas till the seventies. Image size: 260 x360 mm
