PAINTING -A SILENT POWER THAT SPEAKS ONLY TO THE SOUL –A MYSTERIOUS LANGUAGE---------------------------DESIGNED FOR A PAGE ON THE WEB In 1975/6 Peter Greenham C.B.E. R.A. Keeper of The Royal Academy Schools and Sir Hugh Casson then President of the RA gave me access to photograph all of the state rooms at The Royal Academy for the sole purpose of using the photos to give lectures with. I am taking this opportunity of doing so now through the Internet. My purpose is, as a former student of the Schools, is to do two things: One, encourage young artists to become inspired to attend these Schools. Two, encourage anyone making a will to leave as much as possible to this brilliant establishment. From £1 – to £1 million. …………………………….. All of the photographs are COPYRIGHT TO THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS and under no circumstances can they be copied without permission from the RA. …………………………………….. I would like to make a few quotes from a few minds from the past. "The further backward you look, the further forward you can see." Sir Winston Churchill………………………………………. Delacroix……..Describes painting as “ A silent power that speaks only to the soul… a mysterious language.” --------------------------------------------------- Goethe : “ We speak too much, we should speak less and draw more.” “As for myself” This master of the word confessed, “ I should like to renounce the word, and speak only in images, as does plastic nature. This fig tree, this snake, this cocoon, exposed to the sun in front of this window, all these things are secret signs; and those who could decipher their true meaning, could do without any spoken or written language in the future. There is in the word something so futile, so pointless, I am almost tempted to say, so ridiculous.” ----------------------------------------- Sir Joshua Reynolds. First President of the RA. Said “ Great Painting is in many points of view and strictly speaking no imitation at all of external nature………………………………… Klee :- The more fearful a place this world is the more abstract art becomes, while a happy world produces a realistic – minded art. Art does not reproduce the visible, but makes visible.
