HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, LILI!!! What a lovely painting! -- Anneke's birthday gift! Before looking higher and further, in “HAPPY BIRTHDAY LILI!!!,” be sure to study with the magnifier the actual and wonderfully real miniature Still Life in the window -- a splendid painting all by itself! Then go ahead and move your glance -- gradually though -- not too fast! -- through and up from the foreground window-sill and across the street (our eyes drawn there by the bright golden bucket or vase on the step, on up the incredible realistic steps, still further up to the tree. There’s not any other green in the painting except below on the sill’s cups and mango(?) and that green leads us on higher till we finally reach the top of the old wall. Just notice how smooth the movement is when compared to the many crafts persons who achieve perspective but do so only by making several stops at consecutively further planes along the way. It is a similar effort, though exaggerated, by flat graphics arranged in several consecutive parallel rows in pop-out greeting cards, children’s books, and early stereoscopically viewed double photos. But I want to go higher and further! Those smooth and perfectly angled steps serve not only to take us up to the tree; in doing so these steps create the wall’s distances back and up. And the green tree (olives?) takes up on up to the height of the far wall. Notice the little trick of having the tree edged in behind the wall at the top of the stairs setting distance between the two walls, as well as the ragged old rampart’s stones as sort of a stairway on up to the top. The still life is framed in the arch of the window. It looks very Mediterranean, a bit too sunny for Holland.
