WHEN I WAS ON PROZAC FOR DEPRESSIONS IN THE 90s I MADE THE SAME TYPE OF ARTWORK IN SERIES. JUST COLOURED STICKS RANDOMLY DRAWN. MAY I ASK WHAT YOUR BACKGROUND IS FOR PAINTING YOURS?

Artist Reply: Hello Anonymous Guest. Thank you for commenting on "Sticks on Gold". I often paint interwoven colors in the form of lines or squares as a way of materializing how I think or feel. But there are also times when I paint them simply because I enjoy how the colors look in that particular pattern (or non-pattern). Even though it appears the lines are randomly painted, they aren't. I spend a lot of time deciding where I will place them, where they will interweave and what colors I will use. But I don't use any "rules" - I just know when it works the way I want it to. So it could be random in that sense. My intention is to express a certain complexity or multi-"something" (multiple things/thought/emotions/activities/whatever) going on at once but still contained within one canvas/body/mind/heart/whatever. That's how I often experience my thoughts and emotions and for some reason I want to materialize that on canvas. And during the times I am painting "for color", I simply want to see the colors and lines arranged in a way that makes me feel happy or interested. Buuuuut -after having written all that...I have also experienced trauma and depression. Perhaps there are some similarities in our experiences. Or perhaps we felt a similar desire to materialize what seemed impossible to describe during these times? Regardless, thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment. -brandi.
