Chief (sachem) Massasoit of the Wampanoag territory made a mutual aid peace treaty with Plymouth colony and was invited when Governor Bradford declared a day of Thanksgiving. Massasoit came a day early with 90 Indians, 5 dressed deer and over a dozen wild turkeys. They helped preparations teaching Pilgrim women to make hoecakes, cornmeal/maple syrup pudding and popcorn. Pilgrims provided their garden vegetables. Pilgrim flour and indian dried summer fruits allowed Pilgrim women to make blueberry, apple and cherry pie and a sweet wild grape wine. Shooting contests, races and wrestling went so well that Massasoit showed no inclination to leave. The Thanksgiving meal celebration extended itself into three days.
