The Centurion

When Jesus yielded up his spirit the temple veil tore from top to bottom, the earth shook and rocks were split. The Roman centurion was with his prisoner since sunrise as his guards brought Jesus before the Chief Priest, then Pilate, then Herod, and finally back to Pilate for judgment. Battle armor was worn in preparation for rioting associated with controversial prisoners. Roman methods were known for breaking men's spirits. A centurion of rank saw many campaigns and the breaking points of many opponents, but this was not the usual self important upstart. This prisoner's composure appeared to contain more than what Roman armor and training was designed for.
