Isaac Newton at the Edge of the Ocean and the Oceans of Space (I found this quote some weeks after I painted the picture. It could be your gnome or my gnome at the edge of the Ocean etc but I included the quote because I think it fits the painting so well - and also gives an interesting insight into Newtons mind.) Before the grandeur and intricacy of nature, he was, like Ptolemy and Kepler, exhilarated as well as disarmingly modest. Just before his death he wrote: I do not know what I may appear to the world; but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy, playing on the seashore, and diverting myself, in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, while the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me. I love this quote and always offer it to accompany the many prints I sell of this picture at my little gallery here in Devon. People always want to have it.
