In Egypt, Kom Ombo is 30 miles North of Aswan. This was once the sanctuary for a large number of crocodiles, and the center of worship for Sobek, the crocodile-headed god of fertility and creator of the world. Still standing, and open to the public for viewing, is the temple that Sobek shared with the war god, Haroeris. This temple is most unique in that it consists of twin parts that are attached but completely separate. Each temple has its own entrance, halls, and chapels. The temples were built during the Ptolemaic period, between 300-380 BC. This image was taken in a chapel within Kom Ombo that is open to visitors. In a display case within the chapel there are these crocodile mummies that were found in a pit in a nearby necropolis. Crocodiles were mummified in ancient Egypt to appease and worship Sobek.
