This was one of those Chance Favors the Prepared Mind kind of shots..I was photographing Some Turkey Vultures near a field in Northern California on Thanksgiving Day and when I had finished, I got into my car and was driving away when I spotted a male deer out in the field. I pulled over to photograph him but after one shot he started jumping forward through the brush , I pulled forward and try to shoot through the passenger window as he was starting to gather speed , I tried to drive up ahead to get a better angle and I noticed that he was trying to beat me to the spot , he apparently wanted to get across the road to the other side and saw me as a possible obstacle I guess. I then realized that he was going to jump over the metal gate that separated him from the road I was traveling on . I then realized at the sudden burst of speed he accelerated to that I would not make it to the spot I had chosen. I had to slow down as I knew at the rate we were going he would have jumped right over the hood of my car. So I grabbed my camera and swung it around to the front of the driver side as I knew it was going to be the only chance I would have and I had to try and time it for the exact moment he cleared the fence. I managed to fire off one shot as he leaped over the fence and then he was off to the other side where he stopped and gave me a quick glance as to acknowledge our race and then he trotted off into the brush...
