This colored pencil painting is based on a still life scene that I set up and photographed. What I enjoy most about doing still life artwork is the process of finding and placing the items to be included in the scene. I have several jars of pennies that I keep meaning to take to the bank, but never seem to do. This was a good start, but I wondered how I could use a jar of pennies. I set a full jar on the floor and moved around it trying to visualize what to put with it and where the additional items might be placed. I don't think that I had my eyes closed, but during my movements I accidently bumped the jar and it fell over spilling the pennies. The jar itself contained all that was needed! All I did consciously was place the lid of the jar where you see it, and this still life was born. I chose to use a range of values from dark to light in rendering the piece to add depth and interest and to also help lead the viewer through the picture plane. I admit that emphasizing value in its rendering also did influence my choice of titles. The piece is entitled "Value in Art" and was done on Grafix drafting film using Farber-Castell Polychromos and Lyra Rembrant Polycolor pencils. The size of the artwork is 11 X 14 inches.

Nicely done. I especially like the contrast between lights and darks, which give this painting a nice feeling of depth. Well done.
