In fact, a lugger is a beautifull sailing fishingboat. But appelations are obstinate and once when steam made his entrance, at the end of the 19th century, the name "lugger" was preserved. This kind of boats rang in, at longer term, the end of the sailing fishingboats. In the begining the steam engine was an ungainly and unreliable thing who took a lot of place on the small boats and the very conservatif fishermen still had more confiance in their sails but had to admid that the engine was unvaluable when wind works again. Later, with the the introduction of the new, and better, compound steam engines, fishermen began to have more confiance and slowly sails disappeared. Image size: 260 x 360 mm
