Ida and Erminia in the fields

Oil cementite and graphite on cardboard, 2014, 85 x 56 cm. The painting is ellipse shape (the indicated dimensions are the diametres of the ellipse). An awesomeness from an old family pictures album. I met my grandmother only in the stories told by my mother, because Ida, this was her name, died young. Looking at her pictures as a girl always fascinated me and made me imagine about her life, that must have been not easy. In all this pictures indeed, she never smiles, and always seems to be really serious and with heavy hidden thoughts. This is also the bitter melancholy memory that my mother have about her, although Ida, my mother says, was lovely and sweet. Probably this is why I tryed to create a bucolic, carefree scene, pretending to represent a sunny day in the life of this women. The other woman, Erminia, was a sort of second mother to my mother. She is still living and is today 99 years old, and has always been in all her life a delicate, empathic and lovely presence for the whole family.
