This painting, is part of a series of works to honour the memory of Nelson Mandela, who is called "Madiba" or father by South Africans. Mandela is known for his love of children. This painting illustrates the deep concern that Madiba had for all children and especially those living in poverty and substandard situations. But no matter how dire the circumstances, Mandela gave these children hope that life can be better. The artist wanted to make this child universal in appearance. The child could be from one of South Africa's townships, or from Indonesia, China, South America, or could be a Native American or Eskimo. Actually she is also ageless. Is she 8 or 18? No matter where she lives or how old she is, Mandela has given hope to people the world over that by coming from compassion and forgiveness and by working together, we can all strive to make this world a better place to live for all. This painting is rich in colors and texture. The strong geometric design of the cap contrasts with the softness of her face. The flowing curtain to the left allows air in and sunshine to provide the warmth of optimism. This highly textured work of art literally shimmers with colors. A portion of the proceeds is donated to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.
