Gathering Of Gulls

"The sun is high, the day warm and wonderful, as a flock of seagulls settles down at the edge of the tideline. They gather momentarily before soaring again to hunt the waves for their next meal."

Artist comment: "This scene was one of my first 'gull' paintings, showing my fascination for one of nature's most resilient birds. Somewhat awkward on foot, they are graceful as they soar in the air. The seagull's voracious appetite takes them from shoreline to garbage heap. They will squabble amongst themselves for scrapes; even torment a pelican until it gives up it's catch. They follow fishing boats for the gleanings or ride the ocean waves for a meal. At this 'gathering of gulls', I captured a 'community' meeting of seagulls, checking out the beach for any morsel left behind by the outgoing tide. With oil paint on canvas, I sketched a 'D' shaped composition, painting sky and water, leaving white the areas where the gulls were to be. I painted the birds and finally the dark piling with its reflection. The patient cormorant on it was the finishing touch.”
