This is my first of many portraits of the first ever television artist, Jon Gnagy who I had the privilege of meeting twice in 1966 and 1971. He was a fantastic artist as well as a fine gentleman. Like artist Norman Rockwell, he was scorned by art critics because he actually could make a living off his talents rather than explaining what each of his paintings were about. This sketch was done 50 years after I last talked with him. His talent is missed. This illustration can be found in the book, "Jon Gnagy - America's Art Teacher" by Charles M. Province here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QFC5JB9?ref_=pe_3052080_397514860 You may read passages from this book at the Jon Gnagy Historical Society here: http://pattonhq.com/Gnagy.html

I recognized him immediately, Mike. My introduction to art was via his TV show and my parents gave me his instruction kit for Christmas in the 60's. I had that kit, with instruction books into the late 70's when someone actually stole it from my classroom. I hope it's still doing someone some good. Very well done, I hasten to add. :)

Artist Reply: Thanks so much Charles. I too was born in the 1950's and was given a Gnagy set in the mid 1960's. I have taught many Gnagy lessons to my 7-8th grade students. Even though they groan a little when I present them, by the time they are finished with their sketches, they love them. Keep up your great art.
