Self Portrait

Dutch born DOB 01/04/1989 Female

My mid teens were extremely expressive as I openly came out as bisexual and candidly expressed my affections towards both sexes. I often look back at myself as tremendously promiscuous and a bit of a nymph during that period in my life and it was during this time that I often drew orgies of women and women in sexual positions to create a stir. I found excitement in the taboo and sought out the raunchy and vulgar to produce a scene and I still harbour this attention seeking quality that propels my work. My romantic exploration with women has certainly taught me a lot about the female anatomy and the “deeper” connection I have with a woman regarding sexual endeavours. I have started seeing the beauty within being portrayed by suggestion rather than provocative confrontation which creates a softer approach to my art but on the contrary I do very much like the “oomph” of directness created by bare flesh in my female nude portraits therefore won’t stray in a safe spotlight for long.

Acrylic as a medium is useful for me as I like to have control and I simply can master neither oil nor watercolours to do what I want them to do as I often use water to create skin textures and colours and like using canvas as my main facet. Acrylics also have a patina to them that I cannot quite describe but seem to work harmoniously with my nudes making them more lustrous and vivid than I could ever imagine. My style is often reminiscent of Alfonse Mucha’s Art Nouveau paintings with a 21st century graphical twist. I have a lot of passion for the Art Nouveau movement due to its’ romantic, organic and revealing nature which I like to recreate. Aubrey Beardsley and Gustav Klimt are my heroes and I would kneel and kiss their feet if I would ever meet them in the afterlife. My newest heroines are Audrey Kawasaki, Lisa Yuskavage, Miss Van.. and Sylvia Ji. They share the same obsession with femininity and its many beautiful aspects, not to mention erotica and sex appeal. Despite not being a feminist, I believe in the power of women and feel that we make the world a more beautiful place! “I paint what moves me.” Audrey Kawasaki
