Abstract and Minimalist Art
Pragmatically, I think that the abstract expressionism is not an
accurate description of the body of work created by each artist. Indeed, the
movement comprised many different painterly styles varying in both technique
and quality of expression.
Despite this variety, abstract expressionist
paintings share several broad characteristics, they are basically abstract. Also, they show similar emphasis on the unstudied and intuitive application of that technique in a form sophisticated of psychic spontaneous akin to the automatism of the Surrealists, with a intuitive intent of expressing the force of the creative unconscious of the creator.
Constructively, more than the colors or shapes one can create, there are relieves and textures. This is the part I love most when I capture a moment onto a surface.
Many enjoy a flat surface, but in my opinion, the relieve makes
the work have more life and, at the same time, projects the color.
Personally, curators have criticized me for the way I paint and make relieves; “there’s
a lot of mud”, “you don’t leave any space”, “the
atmosphere is very saturated,” etc. According to my way of thinking, it’s boring to follow the follow academic norms of painting.
When I break these norms, and allow the color to
express itself, is when I truly create something different.
In this day in age, when the art world is saturated with an immense quantity of artists, where in every country there are thousands of expressions and a need to express them.
I
have no idea what can possibly be created in the next hundred years.
As you can see, nothing in these paintings are recognizable. There are no people, fruit or landscapes. The space has an abstract perspective, where the composition of colors was birthed through the movement of the spatula.
Unconventional, every painting is created within a particular environment, and if people do not understand that environment, may be they will never be able to appreciate it.
After years of trying to be able to create something new to my eyes, something really inspired me:
This painting is
the one that set me on the path of the abstract. In March of
2005, I painted this in three exhausted days. In that time I had yearned to be
to create something similar to abstract art; something different than the boring
and methodical techniques. The title of this painting and another of my work
speaks of the state of mind in which I found myself in the moment that I was
painting. In some case,
the title can reflect what I was thinking in that moment, or there may simply
be some similarity between the title and the shape or form of the art.
"I love this one - it evokes emotion for me, the struggle between the black and white thinking of the world, the gray area that struggles to show itself and underneath it all a world of color that shapes us... beautiful and provocative work... I love art that makes me feel, think and express... this hits me on all of those levels, thank you for sharing.".......Shelby Koning
