Media: Coloured indian ink
Paper type: Watercolour paper; 250 g/m²
Size: A3 (29,7 x 42 cm)
Time: 9½ h

¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨
By painting this artwork, I developed a passion for coloured Indian ink! Before, I didn't know, there is such a difference between watercolour and Indian ink. I was amazed how well and uniform the fluid colour can be applied. The painting works even better on shadows. I had a great control, where the colour runs. A further advantage is the fact, that the ink is waterproof as soon as dried. So I can paint over and over the same part without difficulty. Beyond that, the brightness of the colours are just great, even if they are mixed.

For an especially noble and graceful look, I decided to draw the princess in the style of the shoujo-manga as they've looked in the seventies (who knows "The Rose of Versailles" comprehend my choise ^^). I designed the dress very pompous. Unfortunately, I'm not very happy with the result. The dress is too overloaded and too gaudy. Afterwards, I would have choosen rather pale, more discreet blue tones. Hair and face aro too coarse in my opinion. I've searched and seen many 70's shoujo artworks, and there are such delicat and beautiful images! But mine is still light years away from these images. Nevertheless, I'm glad I painted it. I've learned a lot.

?50 MANGA BABES to draw and paint? is an English How-to-draw book displaying fifty artworks of different women in manga style along with step-by-step illustrations, detailed descriptions and drawing tips.

I got the wonderful commission to draw fifteen of these "babes" (have a look at the right column).
I had to meet following criteria: drawn in manga style, female character, view of the whole body, related to a topic/character type, no background.

This book is great and I can recommend it to all who learns to draw in manga style.

50 MANGA BABES ?Nurse? by Viviane .ch

Media: Markers, coloured pencil, coloured indian ink
Paper type: Smooth cartridge paper; 220g/m²
Size: A3 (29,7 x 42 cm)
I wanted to draw the nurse in a teenage manga style, so I choose a stylish and somewhat crazy nurse costume like popular on cosplay and the drawing style of Arina Tanemura. Unfortunately, I didn't entirely meet her style (maybe due to using coloured pencils, Arina Tanemura paints with coloured Indian ink or watercolour what looks differently).
I like her pose, the red trims and the funny medical bag. ^^ It wasn't a good idea to paint the light blue stripes on such a smooth paper with Indian ink. u_u;; If the lines won't be drawn constant in exactly the same tempo, they will become darker where I remain a little bit longer on the same spot like at the lines ends for example. Fortunately, it isn't that noticeable in the end.^^

Paper type: Color-copy laserprint satined; 120 g/m²

At first, I intended to draw a mother cradling her baby in her arms. But this motif is just a bit too hackneyed in my opinion, thus I just began to draw a toddler. I was happy she looks so cute, but also was afraid that the mother might not keep up with her. I considered what activity mummy could be doing while the child is watching her. So I got the idea of hanging out the washing.^^ Besides, that suggests they may be outside, perhaps in the garden and the sun shines. That raises the spirit and makes the scenery more jauntily. I supported that mood with the use of pastel nuances. They seems to be a happy, little family. ^__^

Paper type: Uncoated paper; 250 g/m²
For colouring the kindergarten girl, I used mainly Letraset Tria markers. To intense the contrast of light and shadow, I took a darker coloured pencil than the shadow part and traced the edge between light and shadow. Towards the shadow parts I faided out the darker colour to its original shadow tone, whereas drawing a sharp edge towards the light part.
I'm glad the girl has become sweet (I don't often draw children). It was my intention to draw a simple, cheerful and light-hearted artwork.^__^

The flower maid was one of the most time-consuming babes even one wouldn't consider it.^^ This time the outlines took very long (three hours, normally I need just one), probably because the lines are very fine and there are many frills, laces and the netting of the basket and her hat. Maybe I'm just too finicky.*lol* Btw, I traced the silhouette's outlines twice so that the lineart won't be too pale. I enjoyed to add colour with Indian ink (have a look at the Princess's description). In manga and animes, I saw this sort of dress several times (no idea how they are called). It seems Japanese have a weakness for them. I never liked them.*lol* But I think it just suits a flower maid perfectly.^^ Besides, I've taken the liberty of drawing the upper part of the dress more tight-fitting (normally it's much more loose). I like the contrast "wide-tight" regarding to garments.^_^

Time: 15 h

¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨

I like the combination of various pink shades with accents of black and white parts. I imagine that this signorina could be a young, Italian fashion model.^.^

This image steps out of line a bit, because there are no outlines compared to my other artworks. Here, just areas of colours are docking on each other. That requires a rethink when designing the image, because I can't lean on my lines, I'm used to. I had to make sure that the same or similar coloured areas remain distinguishable from each other (I resolved it with gradients) and conform harmoniously into the overall picture.

Another speciality of this image: The original file is a vector graphic. That means, the areas are built up of curves jointed by invisible points instead of pixels. That has the advantage that this image can be printed as large as desired without any decline in quality.

For me, it's a very different way of doing an artwork and that makes the work juicy. I have to use other graphic software than usually.

First, I drew a sketch of the girl on an A5 paper sheet and scanned it. I traced (not auto-trace but by hand) the lines with the program Corel Draw, because it works finely for bezier curves, but I coloured it in Adobe Illustrator, because this program does the gradients better.

I've a soft spot for the 1960's style, thus I used it as a influence for the background. I'm not sure if I really can be content with the outcome, because I usually don't make anything in this style and so I've a great lack of exercise and experience.
