I'd been thinking about the polar bear for a while, then one of my reference photos spoke to me. I added the cub and the icy background. This will be the first in a series of mother/baby drawings.

I had the reference photo for some time while I tried to figure out how to draw water. Recently, I figured out that charcoal powder dissolves in water, and used the charcoal-water mixture to paint the pond just like watercolor. 2009.

They live in the arctic (from Canada to Russia) and shy away from humans. These whales have a tusk, like that of an elephant, emerging from their upper left jaw. Nearly all males have one, a rare individual will have two, and most females have none. They have lost their dorsal fin to a dorsal ridge, possibly an adaptation to their icy environment.

Drawn in black and white charcoal on blue matboard, 2009.

What the Future Holds by Heather Ward

I used four colors in this drawing - black charcoal, white charcoal, sepia Conte, and dark sepia Cretacolor on 24"x18" bristol vellum paper.

When I decided to draw an orangutan, the director of RedApes.org contacted me about the drawing before I'd even begun, which gave me the idea for the drawing. "What the Future Holds" is symbolic of the plight of these most endangered of all the great apes. There are two species, the Sumatran (more endangered) and Bornean. This drawing represents the Bornean orangutan, whose hair is shorter and darker than its Sumatran relative. I will be donating a portion of my profits to orangutan conservation.
