Icons are intended to respond to deep questions, and every age has its own set of problems that trouble the heart. For this reason, depictions of the canonically sanctioned subjects of iconography such as the Holy Trinity, Christ, Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the saints and angels often reflect the historical circumstances experienced by the artists who painted them. Thus, an icon may be considered an expression both of individual faith and of the manifestation of a civilization's aesthetic values and material possibilities. Troubled times have often produced icons of tranquility; times of peace and plenty often bring forth icons that stress asceticism in an attempt, perhaps, to restore balance between material and spiritual values.
