Long time no see! Im back with another pastel entitled What else? (for those of you who do not see the connection, lets just say that this could be a private joke for Mr George Clooney! LOL) Kidding apart& Having a drink together is the ideal occasion for friends to meet and talk about the weather or more serious personal topics. This is the reason why this cup of coffee is in my eyes a symbol for conviviality and friendliness. This is the second part of a study. The purpose is to draw/paint the same subject a still life composed of three oranges and a glass of juice as you can see- with different media. Softies on Ingres pastel paper measuring 18x23 cm.

St. Nicolas, Père Fouettard and the Donkey by Greg Vilton

St. Nicolas (a kind of equivalent for Santa Claus), bishop of Myra, is the patron saint of all the children and a very popular figure in the North of Europe. The legend says that he rescued a group of kids who were about to be cut into pieces by an evil butcher. And each year he comes to visit the children on December, 6th and bring them sweets or presents. The character on the right is Père Fouettard, a friar who always remains in the shadow of St. Nicolas and obeys him. Disobedient kids fear him a lot because he is allowed to punish them and even whip them with the branches of his fagot if they have been very nasty during the year. The third character of this picture is St Nicolass donkey. As he carries on his back the sweets and presents that his master offers, it is commonly recommended to the children to leave a bunch of carrots at the doorstep of the house.
