I painted this on site yesterday afternoon, August 17, 2006.

It is oil on Gessobord, 9" x 12", and I used my Guerilla Paintbox to paint it.

I set up at Lake Colby, Saranac Lake, New York, and sat on a big rock right up near the lake. There was long grass all around. I lost track of the time and my surroundings and almost dropped my brushes into the water once or twice. The water was deep there, so that would have been unfortunate cause the brushes would then have been lost unless I went swimming.

Balto my dog was barking and making a big fuss so I had to take him out of the car, but he tends to wander and has no concept of road and cars. The rock I was perched on was high and near a road, so Balto sat in the long grass at my feet and I put his leash around my ankle. It reached, just barely. I needed to hurry and get the scene down because Balto was being a pain, so I sort of rushed through this painting. I kind of like the way the reflections came out.

The view is Lake Colby, with the blue sky and the fluffy clouds and the mountains reflected in the lake.

This is painted with a very limited palette.

I painted it from life in studio using natural North light. It is 18" x 14" and oil on canvas. The image has been edited to be acceptable to artwanted guidelines and the black squares do not exist on the actual painting.

This was painted in two sessions, I took a quick portrait I did from life back to the studio and made some additions and refinements to it. The model posed again in the same way.

This painting shows Harry in what I think is his signature hat look. The painting is oil on Ampersand Gessobord and it is 12" x 9". I am working with a lot more paint now, thicker more lush paint in general.

Only natural Northern lighting was used in the studio.

This painting is 14" x 11", oil on Ampersand Gessobord.

Harry is a great model, it was fun to paint him. I am finding as I progress with this work that the possibilities with oils are basically limitless, which is exhilarating and a little scary also in some ways. It gives me a lot of excitement for the future paintings.

Backstory: Aviva was annoyed at Harry the model, because Harry wanted to work through the long break in the afternoon, and Aviva would have preferred not to, but she agreed to, and in Aviva's view Harry could have been more demonstrative in saying thank you. I am glad in a way since I got an intensity of expression there that I find interesting in this portrait.

This painting is oil on Ampersand Gessobord and it is 12" x 9".

It is a combination of two carts, one for bottles of drinks which the light is shining through. That main cart has an awning and also sells hot pretzels and stuff. The other cart is partially obscured and has an umbrella and sells ice cream. There is a clear plastic bag of trash on the side of the main cart, and some trees and lawn and greenery in the background. Those yellow flowering shrubs were just starting to go into bloom in the background.

The painting is 9" x 12" and is oil on Ampersand Gessobord.

I painted this on site in Central Park and it's my first attempt at plein aire painting in Central Park with all the people all around. I had fun painting this and hope to do more of these and learn lots more in the process.

The model kept falling asleep so I painted her that way. In this one, I am starting to use more paint and starting to amplify the surface texture a bit with brushwork. It's 14" x 11", oil on Ampersand Gessobord.

This is a small relatively quick study in oil I did of the Russian model, full figure seated. From life last Sunday in 1/3 of a session.

I like this one, the feel of it, it's simple but for me it sort of captures the moment.

The painting is 12" x 9", oil on Ampersand "Gessobord".
