Morgaine, Summoning the Boat by Wendy Feldmann

Dimensions: 28" w x 31" h
Date of Work: 09/2005

Morgaine, raising her hands with power flowing, mysteriously summons the swan boat to her, across the lake of Avalon...

Collage of cotton fabrics, free-motion quilted with Madeira rayon thread; Glass beads, pearls, hematite beads; Hand dyed Mohair locks; a few strands of yarn; Polyester batting.

Having read Marion Zimmer Bradley's book "Mists of Avalon" many times, I was inspired by the image of Morgaine standing on the shores of the lake, her hands uplifted, summoning the boat with her mystical powers.

Her face and hands were first embroidered with the machine (without sketching first!) and then colored with Prismacolor pencils. Her hair is created from locks of hand-dyed mohair, some yarn, with beads, pearls, and the occasional hematite star bead.

This is the first time I have really incorporated beadwork into my quilting, and I am HOOKED! LOL! I wish the photo could actually show just how deliciously textural this piece is! It positively glitters!

Morgaine is portrayed on shore, summoning the boat across the water... This scene was inspired by the book "The Mists of Avalon"

This is also the image that my current art quilt is being based upon - I never draw before I quilt - this is a first :-)

Azrael and Quan-Yin by Wendy Feldmann

This quilt was created for my dear friend, Jasmine Becket-Griffith for the 2005 EBSQ Pet Portrait Swap. It shows her two dear fur-babies, Quan-Yin on the left, and Azrael in front on the right... who has trapped a little faerie in his paws! (...although she doesn't seem to mind, does she...?) They are portrayed as Faerie Cats - after all, how else would one portray the cats of a famous faerie artist? :-)

I have never met these cats in person, and worked from their photos. I tried to capture the smug slit-eyed expresssion of Azrael, seen in most of his photos. I found it a challenge to be sure to make him appear smug (and not mad!) but I am pleased with the effort. Quan-Yin's eyes are always wide open round, checking everything out. I envision her in this piece as standing guard over Azrael, as he consorts with the laughing wee faerie-folk...

The cats and the little faerie were each created individually. They were collaged from bits of cotton fabrics, free-motion machine quilted over a layer of batting and backing fabric, then cut out. They were placed atop a sandwich of backing fabric, batting, and background fabric. The background details were then added - such as subtle landscaping, and the full moon with clouds in the sky.

Once the pieces were arranged, the overall machine quilting began, both to secure the cats and the background, and to add highlights and details such as whiskers.

I use an Elna 6004 sewing machine, dropping the feed dogs and using an embroidery foot. I mostly use cotton fabrics from my ever-growing stash, both poly and cotton batting, and Madeira thread.

This was one of the largest pieces I have done - quilting it on the machine was more of a physical task that I realized it would be!

In Memory of Pixie Cat by Wendy Feldmann

Pixie is surrounded by an Art Nouveau style border, with his name intertwined into the left side. Beneath him are a few Forget-Me-Not flowers; beside him are roses from his favorite rose bush, and "bleeding hearts" flowers, often used to symbolize the passing of a loved one. There are rainbow colors in the black of his coat, symbolizing the Rainbow Bridge.

I've shown him with a gentle quirky smile (don't all cats smile?) and with faerie wings, befitting his name.

She is 11" x 14" ink on bristol board, and will be colored in at some point in Prismacolor pen and pencil.

The dog was my dear old dog, Bosco (it was he who "Waltzing Dog" was named for). The majestic Winter Faerie is holding a lilac cat in her lap (my dear sweet kitty, "Indiana", who passed away the year this card was sent).

Among the snowflakes, I've included a snow-white owl for winter, a chick-a-dee, and 2 golden pears. The faerie is spreading the cold tendrils of Winter across the land...

Rendered in Prismacolor pencils, some prisma pens, and micron pen for outlining, on bristol board, 8" x 10"
