Does the category Underwater: "Life Under the Sea" include "Under the River?" Otters are one of my favorite water dwellers. "Hunting Grounds" is a watercolor inspired by an close encounter with a river otter. Seated at a judicious distance on the bank, I watched him catch a salmon nearly as big as himself, haul it out onto a mid-stream rock, and enjoy it while declaring in no uncertain [otter-speak] terms he wasn't about sharing. Thanks for considering!

Whether the fantasy whimsy random sightings of fevered fishermen lost at sea, or REAL beautiful beings found swimming and living in deep underwater grottos, coral communities or on uncharted islands around the world, Mermaids have been talked about in history for simply eons. From the history og Greek and Roman mythological tales of their beauty and life rescuing skills of humans, to fairy tales of how they barter for human abilities to be with the humans they fall in love with, even to our current times where attempts to search for proofs they exist, to hoaxes uncovered in some cases by some who want to prove their existence more than ever so they concoct elaborate stories for frenzied media coverage to prove their stories. As well, tired old fishermen of centuries older than our times often mistook the swimming motions and undulating forms of sea cows (or manatees) as these magical, beautiful, underwater sirens of the seas and oceans. These oral stories passed through crew members then orally passed through family members. In this manner, myths became legends, then legends became tradition of histories of many countries of the world. So the legends of mermaids and merfolk beings became traditional realities of Underwater beings able to live and frolic and save people occasionally in worldwide waterways. I am entering this original artwork of an original mermaid character for the Underwater Art contest.
