Watercolour on Canvas?

never painted with watercolour properly before and am looking to invest some money into it to get started. I have a big idea on a painting but I have my heart set on putting it on an 8" by 24" canvas.Recommend any relatively cheap alternatives to the 'Golden Absorbent Ground'? Also want to know the best starter paints etc. Thanks :)

I use almost exclusively Golden products in my own art, and I know they can be expensive, but I do use both their high flow and fluid acrylic paints with regular (rose scented) water, straight onto a pre-primed canvas, as well as on top of their mediums. This gives a lovely watercolor effect. You can see it in many of my artworks posted on this site. On my own website, NoWrongArt.com, I have a post showing 20 different Golden mediums -- how they look wet and dry, how matte or glossy they appear, and how they hold pigment. There are closeup pics of them all, including several porous mediums such as ground for pastel and light molding paste... which could be options for you. Here's just one pic from NoWrongArt showing watered down Golden paints on bare pre-primed canvas -- you can even see some of the bare white canvas peeking through, especially top right...

Thank you! This was really helpful. I must say though I have looked at the Golden products and they are really expensive ?? I decided to try a cheaper brand but one I've always known to be good for their pencils etc. I bought 18 Derwent watercolour paints and a relatively cheap gesso just to get me started.

I think the cheapest way to get Golden mediums is through Amazon.com, but the paints from DickBlick.com. Good luck... looking forward to seeing what you create! :D
