The Tree

Painting I did from a photo I took on my way home the day I found out my Uncle died. He was my artistic influence as a kid. The Tree was off the highway and close to his favorite spot as a kid. The tree was ending its yearly cycle but was glowing with life at the same time. It was screaming for attention as I drove by... I did about 20mins to circle back and take the photo. I did the painting in about an hr up at his son's house on the lake whe he spent most of his last 6 months, and which I spent 6 weeks holidays up there with them camping by the lake, fishing and painting everyday. It hangs in Eric's bedroom today

A wonderful story and great tribute to your uncle.

Good painting! tough to critique with a story like that. i like the dark branches in the tree a lot. the sky says it was a very pleasant day. you could have made it more dramatic artistically but it's still good. background trees always confound me a bit - wanting to make them too dark. it helps the depth of field to 'gray' them down a bit - use a complimentary color to dim them. ditto for the far field. nice work, tho. and lovely story.

Sorry for your loss, Bill. It is a very touching story and wonderful tribute to your Uncle.

I do like the painting mood. I think there is not enough compositional depth in it: the horizon line could be more light in value and color. The tree a littile bit "edgy" - I mean that you could soften the tree crown in the edges , it will give to it more realistic look.

I love to see a good eye for color in landscape, and you did just that. Great job.

What a beautiful story and a lovely way to express your love of your uncle. The painting evokes emotion and is very haunting. I had a client who came to my Open Studio day and cried over a painting as it was a nostalgic association for her. It is wonderful to be able to evoke emotions from the viewer as it reflects all that passion that has gone into the creation of it.
