so you're a ballpoint genius - just looks like sooooo much work! can't critique what i can't see, tho'. so finish it! btw HOW do you keep the pens going? isn't it frustrating to have one go dry on you in the middle of a piece?

It looks great so far. I especially like how you have shaded the robots shoulder.

elinor shapiro 21 May 2012

wow. is that all dot shading? if it is you have way more patience than i have

Thanks to all of you as you can see i use a ball point semi gel pen which has a smooth flow which enables me to achieve a stippling effect, if ever the tip of the pen clogs i just wipe it out with my bear fingers.

Heres another update to my piece .

This is awesome! Ballpoint? Now that I started using ballpoint, I hardly use graphite anymore. Great job so far! Look forward to seeing the finished piece...

soooo much detail. must be very meditative. you have bear hands? ;)

Mildred King 11 Jun 2012

I love the idea of ballpoint drawing, as I have been doodling in ballpoint on the backs of envelopes for years. Bear Hands, LOL that's cute they don't look furry from here though...

Mildred King 11 Jun 2012

One question. How ,where do you get the ides for the subject matter? Is it an item and then you build a kind of story around it? do you gather a bunch of seemingly non related items? and then make connectors?

Tracy Ryan 13 Jun 2012

oooh this is inspiring :)

christopher yap 18 Jun 2012

Glad you guys like it! @Brian Wingender yes you are right its ballpoint, i use a different ballpoint which is semi gel ballpoint which has a smooth flow allowing me to achieve stippling effect.

@Mildred King the idea just come out of my mind but first before i draw it i make it sure that the design is coherent , i don't just immediately draw it what ever comes out of my mind. My idea and inspiration comes from different sources like geometric shape, nature, simple stuff and video games and when the final idea is formed inside my mind the next step is how to put together in harmony to make it interesting .

Gail Caduff-Nash 18 Jun 2012

how much time do you think you take to think it thru' before you start drawing & does some of it 'appear' as you draw?

christopher yap 19 Jun 2012

@Gail Caduff-Nash when i start a new piece i don't usually do any plan, i go strait on the paper and start to draw, i literally let my imagination do the work and i sometimes use reference photo. As i draw, random images start to appear inside my mind, of course the best and interesting subject i choose to appear on my paper. Not all images that pop out in my mind will be drawn ,as i have to be careful in my composition, it must be coherent and look interesting. Usually while i draw new ideas are coming in at the back of my mind for the next new piece. So it only takes me about 2 to 3 days to start a new piece after finishing the other one.
