Painting Digital

I have been asked before, but have never really had time to show how I approach my digital stuff.

Firstly...You can draw and paint digitally just like oils,or any other medium. All freehand with a Wacom tablet and...imagination

This example is very simplistic compared to my detailed stuff, however,I start all of my bigger works just like this. This took about 1 and a half hours.

What you need...A paint program,a Wacom

Open a new image...This one is 2000x2500(pixels).I would suggest staying 1500 or larger...

Here is all the color you will need...

Open that image up and take a brush, any brush at this point really.Opacity set to 100%.Paint something similiar to this...I used the pastel brush but the airbrush will do just as well...

The first thing I do is establish the sky and clouds. Not much detail, just block in the colors and shapes. Also where my light is coming from,in this case top left...

This is all done quickly with a pastel brush.Vary the opacity to start showing light and dark values...

Work on those clouds...Think large, poofy, cotton type shapes. The light will hit the top and fade to the next.

Use a blender brush to pull the light into the dark gradually. This is done by altering the tip size of the brush and the amount of preasure used on the wacom...

Also...you can see where I threw some more light in to be blended into the next "row" of clouds...All very loose at this point.

Here I faded the light I just showed...

Keep working on the clouds, adding interest and light. There is no right or wrong here as long as you keep your lights and darks fairly uniform...

Okay, the sky is done for this particular example...You can zoom in and out and detail this stuff till your hearts desire...Far more than what I have showed here.

Time to add some water...

Same principle, varying your tip size and opacity and staying with your light...

Use a blender brush to "pull" your lights into your darks...

Thats about as far as I have time for on this...

You can add a beach,or rocks or...whatever,exactly the same way...

I start my detailed stuff exactly the same way...

This is not a detailed tutorial. It just kinda shows how I do stuff. No tricks...just drawing and painting.

If there are specific questions...I will try my best to answer them...

I like the tutorial you presented. I just got myself a Wacom tablet after using Corel Painter II for 3 years and I love it. My question is more about the sizing of my images. I am finding out that much of my work is too small to print any larger than 8x10". How do I achieve a larger dpi like 300 dpi? Is there a setting I am not using? All my stuff seems to turn out to be 72 dpi. I appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks Cathy Enthof

Hello,

The first step is to set ups the workspace at 300 dpi and the size that you like, say 8.5" x 11. I start all my paper and pencil drawings at that size and scan them in to the computer at 300 dpi. Then I paint them with the Wacom, Tiger was done that way. If you need more answers, please email me at [email protected]. :)
