:) R you A true Artist? :)

I believe a true artist can create a a drop of a hat, flick of a wrist or spur of a second.....I often hear artist say " welll I do not realy feel like drawing", "I need to be in the mood"...I think that when you are a true artist you can create without "feeeling" like creating... I feel that when you are a true artist you can switch on your creativity or switch it off just like a light switch....I myself do that and do not need to be in the mood to create as a true artist...I can just flick the switch on or switch it off... Tell me what you think....

Im afraid I can,t switch off from it, wish I could, there is so much I want to do and learn, and want to do one painting, where I think, yes its perfect, then I will be happy.

Yeah try this,

too much ART can burn any-one out.. Picasso painted for months on end.. Then took months off to re-cover.

I can draw paint at the drop of a dime..but after awhile getting tired becomes normal.

We are human..some-times we do shut down.. simply to RECOVER.

A true ARTIST needs only to create..

How and why becomes personal.

Your statement I don't agree with..

LOL Peter, and others who disagree..

Pete Miller 28 Jun 2005

Im not so sure I agree, I think that people in a general sence have different motivations, and different "switches " to cause them to want to create.

Some Need to be inspired some can just whip something up, some can just go to the canvas , some have to plan out every detail... It all depends on the individual and whichever type you are is who you are, a true artist is one who re-creates images he sees or thinks up. how that person gets to the finished piece is inconsequential.

nope -not a "true" artist. if i dont "feel" like painting it always comes out in the finished works. I think its great when people can crank out one great work after another, I just dont have that ability.

Talia Sherman 28 Jun 2005

every artist gets burnt out every now and then, i find that if i get a break after i get drained out my work is so much better than if i just force myself to be inspired.every artist needs a break sometimes.

Bluemoonshadow 28 Jun 2005

I am with Juan... hard to explain myself but does the creations need to be in any output?? What if your mind keeps creating, but the body is tired and cannot create??

After my surgery last November, my mind kept creating a whole bunch of images and concepts... yet I was not able to hold a pen/pencil/brush nor hold onto the mouse steady enough to select anything....

Might depend on each person's interpretations what art/artists could mean... I call myself artist because I chose to, not because I was or was not able to create something someone can see... My mind is always working though..:-)

Cheers,

Blue

I'm definately a very moody artist. If I try to force it you can tell it.

Johnnice Johnson 28 Jun 2005

I'm with Georgia and others above...if you force it and your not in "the mood" you can tell. You can probably to a point "switch it on and off..but only to a point..many factors are involved..everyday life experiences can influence ones creativity.

Jessica Morgan 28 Jun 2005

I need breaks, I get burned out..not physically alot, but mentally. Like Blue said, the ideas are in my head pretty much all the time, but I get tired and need sometimes up to a week... I learned by taking breaks in between projects, the out come of the work is much better and I can put more into it.

Rob Jones 28 Jun 2005

hmmm...I must not be an artist, wasn't really payin' the bills anyway...how 'bout just a guy with some paint, a brush, and a little spare time?!

N. Michael Bryant 28 Jun 2005

Create without "feeling" like creating? Create at the drop of a hat? really? Don't you have to be inspired to draw for the most part? I do, without a doubt. My mood swings are horrible, just horrible and if I'm in a bad mood, I can't do anything, but I'm still an Artist. I can't just switch on my creativity. There's no way that's possible. Any real Artist would tell ya that. To just switch it on would mean inspiration is just a generic-energy source. I don't work like that.

ashok nayak 28 Jun 2005

TRUE ARTIST??? I think artists are always true in nature.

there's no place for the word false here.

ya about MOOD, it's there always.working with a mood....ahh!!

Though your experiences of silence, of transcendence, of the Self, of the MOODS are only for a few seconds, a few minutes, a few hours, maybe---but believe in them. Believe in them. That is your true nature .

Good question..........!!!! :)

I create ...... but not always paintings.........is that what you mean???

oh yes I get burnt, I get grumpy tho if i get held back from painting/drawing/carving/creating toooooo long......not sure what that is but hell sometimes it is almost like i have little choice over it....it is my life....i live my art and I consider my life art.......lol....(even the moments of terrible doubt)......but it does not really let me go...it is always on....i do not know if that is what you mean........even pruning the roses can be art!!!!! LOL (well in my perception).......yet to me art means consciousness of living so i may just live in a different reality...not creating hurts...that i know :) I kinda agree with Pete everyone travels their own road...there is not 'formula' ....difference is what makes artists unique.....difference is good!!!...and well i guess none of us are what you call mainstream! LOLOL

Sean Lynch 29 Jun 2005

I guess I'm not a true artist. Most of the time I can find a dozen other things I'd rather do,and usually do just that.I dont practice,I dont carry a sketchbook around or anything like that. But when the mood does catch me I can get into the zone and do whatever it is that I do...I myself most definetly have to be in the mood or I'm out cutting the grass or something exciting like that...All things being equal,Frazetta would rather have played baseball.

Sean Lynch 29 Jun 2005

I guess its just different for everyone...And I totally disagree with your description as to what a true artist is or is not....

cramer 29 Jun 2005

what is a "fake" artist..maybe if u have the passion for art to call yourself an artist you are one....or maybe your only an artist while in the process of creating art...maybe every one is an artist they just dont call all theyre creations art....who knows lol....for now ill just do my thing and not worry about what it is or what i am for doing it

Rob Mandell 30 Jun 2005

I'd have to say that if you created art, then you are an artist. If you can creat something from your mind , whether it be traditional art, poetry etc, then you are an artist. What if I painted a masterpiece mural, and never painted again. I hope I would be considered an artist for that.

Lisa Eshkenazi 30 Jun 2005

I don't think that being a true artist is about having a 'creativity switch' that you can flip on an off at will. Not everyone is able to create when they're not in the mood...and they can't just flip it on. Some have to build it up slowly by doing warm up exercises, others have to wait until the Inspiration Anvil Of Doom falls on their head. A writer once said "Art is about whether or not there is a scream in [you] wanting to get out in a special way." I tend to agree more with that. To quote the same writer, "Millions of people can draw." But not all of those millions are artists. My 'scream' is always there. Sometimes it's so loud that I can do nothing but desperately draw and paint until I'm waking up from my dreams thinking "That rock needs some more shading." only to realize I'm still in bed. Other times it's so soft I almost forget it's there.

To me, what devides a 'true artist' from someone who 'likes to draw (or paint, or take photos or, or, or...)' is that need to create.
