Manuel Ocampo

Juan's thread about Robert Willaims got me thinking about an artist featured in issue #1 of Juxtapoz. A guy you don't hear too much about anymore. Manuel Ocampo. A HUGE HUGE influence on my work and one of the biggest painters to come out of LA in the last 20 years.

His work can be disturbing to look at and offensive to some. Take a gander:

In exuberant works reminiscent of but not nostalgic for folk paintings, Ocampo's blending of high and low culture, academic and popular, the sacred and secular, image and text supercharge canvases with a blatant disregard for stylistic and idomatic consistency.

Gutsy, bold and filled to the brim with socio-political critique and a perverse take on religious themes, Ocampo has perfected the art of the alchemist "transforming horror into exquisite beauty, history into art, purgatory into salvation."

I always admired Ocampo Terence...although not "my genre" I thought his symbolism and imagry was very powerful. Politically correct he was not...although that is a quality I admire...I always imagined he got a kick out of torturing us with our own fears...heh heh..

His work is awesome, incredibly heavy with symbolism and the style of the people. Here's a link to an article about him and some of his thoughts and creations. Nice thread Terence...http://www.maarte.org/articles/article.php?article=artistMOcampo.html

yeah, he's not for everyone...his books have even more disturbing pictures in them.

Funny story...there's a gallery in Santa Monica where he shows called Track 16. A few years ago he showed his newer paintings and attended the opening as a security guard. No one knew it was him and he walked around all night hassling people. Like telling them to pick up their drinks and stop loitering.

I recognized him so it didn't work on me.
