Detroit Michigan: The Waterfront ca. 1890

I am about three weeks or so into the painting. I am taking my good old sweet time about this work, because the Detroit waterfront is so dear to my heart. When we would come home from our cottage, we would always come to the magnificent sight of the Detroit skyline from across the river from Windsor. The view here is from the position of the Canadian Club Distillery on the Detroit River. Not only were we treated to the magnificent skyline, but also to the heavenly smell of the mash which was eminating from the distillery. This is the first of what I hope to be three paintings of the waterfront which I loved so much as a child.

Wow!! i agree with Sharon!!

Artist Reply: I would congratulate you for your keen eye and perspicacity, but it is way too early in this work to become puffed with hubristic pride, and thereby invite a curse from Zeus or of the evil eye, but thanks for the encouragement.

IT IS LOOKING TERRIFIC, STANTON.

Artist Reply: Thanks Sharon, I am trying to pull this off without my usual number of resource photos. I have had to piece together a general representation of Woodward Avenue from the river to the City Hall and Campus Martius in the background. All of the photos I have used were taken in the morning with the light coming from the East, and I want it to be an afternoon scene with the sun light coming from the West. I think I have a passion to make life difficult for myself.
