Hungry Eyes

10" x 8" Oil on masonite panel. I need to start undercoating my masonite .. The oil doesn't paint properly and sinks into the panel making blending very difficult. It almost looks kind of Warholish ... Just a quick study ... The only thing I did get right were the eyes ... if you look at the painting in person that is. Or the model.

John, I put several coats of Gesso on the rough side of the panel. Then add enough coats to acheive a smooth surface. Sanding the surface smooth but avoid sanding into the panel. When working with a model it is necessary to work very quickly. I use a wet on wet alla-prima method when working with a model. Most of the time the painting is complete in under an hour.

Artist Reply: Thanks Stanley I'll try that .. I've also read that I could just apply a coat or two of umber thinned down with my medium on the smooth side a few days before painting and it'll seal the surface. I too paint mostly wet on wet only stopping if my colours start to muddy together ... if that happens I'll give it a day or two to dry enough to come back to to finish up. Of course it doesn't work with every painting .. I'm working on one that I'll be coming back to a dozen or more sittings

I love the emotion on the face, John. Indeed beautiful eyes!

Artist Reply: Thanks Anneke It looks much nicer in person where you can see the green of her eyes.
