Saint Maria Goretti

This is my version of the Saint Maria Goretti. She, so in love with God, wanted to remain pure and not give herself to anyone outside of marriage. However, a teen lodger in her home who helped her father was sexually obsessed with her, and threatened her life to try and make her compromise her vow. With her refusal to give into his demands, she was stabbed, and soon after, died at the tender age of 12 years old. But just before she died, she forgave her attacker. In later years, after his imprisonment, the attacker saw Maria in a vision, repented of his crimes to God, and had a deep, spiritual conversion, falling in love with Christ himself. Truly, a remarkable story! My work of her depicts her in a more 'warrior like' way, with a light, armor-like vest and gauntlets. This symbolizes her wearing her faith in the battle for her purity. The heart symbolizes the Sacred Heart of Christ, while the pendant makes reference to The Miraculous Medal(try googling it for more info) that many faithful Catholic wear. In addition, the knife symbolizes her death, and the calla lilies, her virginity. size:5x7 media:watercolor, watercolor pencil, ink, graphite and acrylics.
