This was a straight forward painting that presented itself to me in the form of a very dark and very murky old photo I found in a very old Coffee table book in 1991. I saw the possibilities for a first rate harbor scene. I contacted the Cape Ann historical society and they sent me a large number of Xerox copies for a very reasonable fee. I was then able to piece together the scene from about three or four old photos of this part of the harbor from different vantage points. I was very gratified by the quality of the finished painting, especially the delicate shadings of the water in the foreground. I painted the water last and as soon as it was completed, the whole painting fell into place.
