Malaysian Images/Malaysian House

Anuar's paintings celebrate the patterns, textures, and surfaces of rural life, calling our attention Anuar's paintings are inspired by the visual rural experience - whether it is a whole house or a small fragment of a wall. He enjoys incidences of inadvertent beauty created by time, decay, graffiti, signs, and posters. He sees each wall as an Malay architectural palimpsest which records the people who have used them in the past. His wanderings around the rural (kampung) have led to an interest in the visual fragmentation to be found on wood hoardings around kampung sites - this has informed me artistic process. His career as graphic designer left his with a continuing interest in unusual spaces and he has done several bodies of work which focus on abandoned Malay House. to the rich imagery that we too often overlook in our hectic daily migrations. His work captures moments of inadvertent beauty -- the spaces in between Malay houses, the peeling layers of advertisements, the erosion and decay of house facades. During the 1980s, Anuar had graduate in Graphic Design in Mara University, Shah Alam, Malaysia. For the next decade, his designed and works as curator in National Art Gallery, and was awarded two prestigious prizes for his work. Anuar’s training as an Graphic designer deeply informs his artwork, which explores the transformation of the built environment over time, both by the elements and by the people who inhabit it.
