Dresden, Germany (Feb, 1945)

On Feb 12-13, 1945, the Allies fire bombed the city of Dresden, the "Florence on the Elbe." The city, without military importance, was packed with ethnic German refugees, fleeing Eastern Europe and the Russian armies. No one knows for sure, but several hundred thousand civilians died in the flames. The city was reduced to ruins. You can just make out the outlines of the Frauenkirche near the center. The Communist government allowed it to remain as a pile of ruins and "testimony to Fascism."

oh the pain of this scene! what a mindless thing to have done, all those lives and history...for what? I have many photos my dad took of that day, not pretty.....very well done painting,

Hello David! This is an interesting work! The razing of the once beautiful city of Dresden is usually considered to have been an atrocity and a war crime by many people. Retaliation some say for the blitz of London. Dresden , before the war, was known as the 'Florence of the Elbe' and was famous for its architectural splendour. Mostly in the Baroque style! Another example of the mindless vandalism of men at war!! This is a very moving painting. You've really captured the atmosphere of desolation in this picture. Brilliant artwork!
