I had never seen one of these atmospheric events before (May 4, 2008)and it was identified by a helpful viewer at Red Bubble. These are a fairly rare happening so it was quite fortunate that I happened to see one and capture it. It was much more subtle than this in the sky so the contrast was enhanced.

I've seen about 7 of these now and am wondering if jet contrails don't have something to do with it?

Artist Reply: certainly can be in close proximity to them but they only occur in the early summer and the angle has to be just right; evidently not present in the southern hemisphere, at least that is the information I found online...thanks for your comment
