Anxious gazes behind broken masks

This portrait was created after multiple manipulations of the initial image, spread over many years. The history of the Portrait with the masks is connected to an underground student gathering in the former Soviet Union in the end of the 1970s. In the course of some laboratory experiments with the solarization effect and photomontage of cameraless images, I produced a black and white picture with an expended tonal scale. Twenty years later I came back to this imprint, scanned it adding a deep red and brown color to its background. By applying digital manipulation techniques to the surface of the picture, I created a strongly textured multi-layered image that emphasizes the anxiety of the gazes hidden from view by the broken masks.
