Original Size: approximately 81/2" x 11" This is my depiction of a scene in "The Lord of the Rings" novel where Gandalf confronts the Balrog while attempting to escape with his friends. This picture is based more on my idea of the books interpretations, rather than the movie (which I love, by the way. I thoroughly enjoyed the books and the movies...!) I hope you enjoy it.

I love your interpretation of the brilliant epic. Taking on a genuis like Tolkein is such a challenge and you achieved a wonderful result. What a powerful piece. Tolkein would be proud of you. I did read the book and like CS Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia, these books made the biggest impreession on me when I read them when I was a teenager. Like most great literature, they are written on many levels so adults can enjoy them with their children. Great work, Richard!!

Artist Reply: Dear Julie: Thank you for the kind words! So glad you like it! I have been a LOTR/Tolkien/C.S. Lewis fan since my early teen years, and always enjoyed the stories and their motifs and symbolisms. On this piece, I have since modified it a bit to make Gandalf slightly more 'vibrant' & dramatic, and maybe I will post it later for comparison. But essentially, it's the same piece...
