On The Town: New York, Greeley Sq. ca. 1896

This is a 29"x41" watercolor of the New York theater district at the end of the 19th century. As i recall the elevated railway in this scene is the 2nd Avenue El that ran to Greeley Square. There is an interesting historic side light that I included. There is a Playbill for the New York Symphony Orchestra that was conducted by Walter Damrosch who later became the principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic in the 1920s. The charming little Forney Class locomotives were on their way out in this painting with the conversion to the electric powered cars that were invented at the end of the 19th centruy. These little engines were replaced within ten years.

Another of his originals that I own--this piece has to be seen to be appreciated. No one who spends time with it comes away unaffected. The detail is extraordinary--the mood undeniable

Artist Reply: This was an outrageously fun painting to do. My objective in creating the composition was to create a number of different vignettes by creating a scene in a lighted area of the painting, then separating it by leaving dark areas like the stair case roofs and railings and then lighting the interior of the stairwells themselves. Also the loading platforms are lighted and the passenger cars beyond the platforms are darkened with lighted windows. This enabled me to create a great number of scenes within scenes which is one of my favorite creative gambits. I am deeply gratified to hear that after all these years, people still find the work to be a fresh experience every time they look at it.

wow, I love this one so much, I dont know why but it reminds me of Christmas. I can almost smell the street sellers with their roast chestnuts. Gentlemen and ladies all in their best to go to the theatre. Great work Stanton, your truly talented. Lisa x
